Increasing Antarctic Sea Ice under Warming Atmospheric and Oceanic Conditions

چکیده
Estimates of sea ice extent based on satellite observations show an increasing Antarctic sea ice cover from 1979 to 2004 even though in situ observations show a prevailing warming trend in both the atmosphere and the ocean. This riddle is explored here using a global multicategory thickness and enthalpy distribution sea ice model coupled to an ocean model. Forced by the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data, the model simulates an increase of 0.20 10 m yr 1 (1.0% yr ) in total Antarctic sea ice volume and 0.084 10 m yr 1 (0.6% yr ) in sea ice extent from 1979 to 2004 when the satellite observations show an increase of 0.027 10 m yr 1 (0.2% yr ) in sea ice extent during the same period. The model shows that an increase in surface air temperature and downward longwave radiation results in an increase in the upper-ocean temperature and a decrease in sea ice growth, leading to a decrease in salt rejection from ice, in the upper-ocean salinity, and in the upper-ocean density. The reduced salt rejection and upper-ocean density and the enhanced thermohaline stratification tend to suppress convective overturning, leading to a decrease in the upward ocean heat transport and the ocean heat flux available to melt sea ice. The ice melting from ocean heat flux decreases faster than the ice growth does in the weakly stratified Southern Ocean, leading to an increase in the net ice production and hence an increase in ice mass. This mechanism is the main reason why the Antarctic sea ice has increased in spite of warming conditions both above and below during the period 1979–2004 and the extended period 1948–2004.

Forcing Earth’s sea level: instabilities and linear responses
This is particularly true for the future ice discharge from Antarctica. Difficulties arise, for example, because two possibly intertwined instabilities exert major influence on the part of the Antarctic ice that is grounded below sea level. First, the oceanic slope front around Antarctica shields warm waters from the ice sheet, but recent simulations have shown that it can erode abruptly under ...

Future sea-level rise is an important issue related to the continuing buildup of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, with the potential to raise sea level approximately 70 meters if completely melted, dominate uncertainties in projected sea-level change. Freshwater fluxes from these ice sheets also may affect oceanic circulation, contributing to cl...

During the last glacial period and particularly Marine Isotope Stage 3, North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation weakened significantly on a millennial timescale leading to Greenland stadials (Kissel et al. 2008). Ice core records reveal that each Greenland stadial is associated with a warming over Antarctica, so-called Antarctic Isotope Maximum (AIM) (EPICA and Community Members 2006). Recen...
متن کاملImportant role for ocean warming and increased ice-shelf melt in Antarctic sea-ice expansion
Changes in sea ice significantly modulate climate change because of its high reflective and strong insulating nature. In contrast to Arctic sea ice, sea ice surrounding Antarctica has expanded1, with record extent2 in 2010. This ice expansion has previously been attributed to dynamical atmospheric changes that induce atmospheric cooling3. Here we show that accelerated basal melting of Antarctic...
متن کاملLinear sea-level response to abrupt ocean warming of major West Antarctic ice basin
Antarctica’s contribution to global sea-level rise has recently been increasing1. Whether its ice discharge will become unstable and decouple from anthropogenic forcing2–4 or increase linearly with the warming of the surrounding ocean is of fundamental importance5. Under unabated greenhouse-gas emissions, ocean models indicate an abrupt intrusion of warm circumpolar deepwater into the cavity be...
